Fushigi Yuugi (TV)

Posted by Holly on 26 Jan 2008 | Tagged as: Anime, Media Thoughts

I’ve finally finished watching all 52 episodes of Fushigi Yuugi. I enjoyed watching, even though I got very overwhelmed by the fact that I would watch six or seven episodes in a row since that’s the number of episodes on each DVD disc.

My favorite characters were Yui Hongo and Chichiri. Yui just was more of my kind of character than Miaka because she was much more serious and I could identify with her feelings more such as the feeling of being betrayed by a friend and being jealous. Chichiri I liked because…I have a soft spot for characters who have that traveling monk thing going on.

It’s hard for me to exactly say what I think about it because I watched over about two to three weeks, but for those who like shoujo anime, especially ones from the 90’s, it’s one to watch.

.hack//Legend of the Twilight

Today I finished watching .hack//Legend of the Twilight. I haven’t watched a new anime in a while (except for when I watched Loveless in the last few months), so it’s been interesting. I had obtained the first two volumes containing 8 episodes from the library’s Teen section and I got the last volume from Netflix.

It’s a cute anime. I wouldn’t buy it myself because it just really wasn’t my thing. I mean I do like anime such as Magic Knight Rayearth (and um, own it all on VHS), but unless I really get attached to a character in the anime or to the plot, I don’t put it on my list of what I should buy. I haven’t watched any of the other .hack anime, but I do plan on watching at least .hack//sign later on.

The first four episodes introduces you to the anime and most of the protagonists that will be important to the story’s plot, but things don’t really get interesting until the fifth episode where you first start to see an inking of what the plot is and you first have a sense of who the antagonists are. It’s also when Rena is kidnapped and she doesn’t do all that much for the rest of the series other than be the bait to lure Shugo into traps and play the damsel in distress. That kinda annoyed me to be honest.

My favorite character was Hotaru because she was really cute and I liked that in the final episode that her grunty grew big and had wings! So, it’s cute and while it’s worth watching, I don’t think that would be buying the DVDs for myself to own.
